P, P, P, Popcorn!

We are "popping" into summer with popcorn!

"m," "b," and "p" sounds are some of the first sounds to be spoken and articulated clearly by our 2 and 3 year olds. We were working on the "p" sound as the popcorn sound, so we did two weeks in a row of making popcorn. We checked out this book from the library and even though it is geared more toward the 4-8 year range, we have read through it two times. We love the pictures, big and bright! The book brings you from planting the popcorn seed to eating a snack of popcorn, "mmm! delish!" Is popcorn still America's favorite snack? I did a quick google search and it looks like Rice Krispie Treats have taken the title of America's favorite snack. More information about the book, I like that the book doesn't water down the vocabulary for this topic the author uses big words such as: quench, endosperm and pericarps. In the back of the book it has more science of popcorn information. We tried the "From Seed To Sprout" science activity and enjoyed watching the seeds sprout. In addition to the popcorn, we also did white and black beans, chia and flax seeds. The flax and chia started to sprout in only one day! The beans and popcorn took a week to sprout. 

It's always good to find out more about the foods we eat. Is it snack time yet?! Let's pop some popcorn!

Point with your Finger

Mo Willems' Books and Tips to Grow a Reader "No! Point with your finger!" Our daughter has been shouting at us these words as we read her books. I think it helps her stay focused and it is a way in which she is learning to read more words. Tracking the words as we read helps to connect the fact that what we are reading is what is on the page. An article from Learning Without Tears says: "And be sure to use your finger to point to letters and words, which helps kids connect print and speech." Lastly, pointing to the words as we read to our children shows them the pathway words take on the page; left to right and up to down.  As I told someone this weekend when they asked if she could read, "Yes, she is quite the reader." "Moo, Baa, La La La!"

   This has been a favorite book: Moo, Baa, La La La!  by Sandra Boynton. We've also read the Spanish version. Animals making sounds and a question at the end "It's quiet now what do you say?" Which she usually answers "Mama" but today she said "Mama" and then she also said "Dada."  I can't write a children's book blog without mentioning Sandra Boynton books. What wonderful books! Perfect for babies through toddlers. Most of her books also have songs that go with them. She writes with humor and as someone who really knows her audience.
